[By Favian Ee, Singapore] A year has almost gone since the last Symposium in Singapore! Many great memories were created and friendships were forged as sketchers from all over the world congregated in the tiny island of Singapore on our 50th Jubilee. I had the opportunity to be a volunteer helper during the event and to rub shoulders with many of you and learn from our esteemed instructors. This year, I even get to be a lecturer at the symposium in Manchester and share some techniques of storytelling using sequential art!

What makes events such as our yearly symposium special is not so much the location, but the people. We can visit a location any time to sketch, but it’s rare to have everyone at the same place at the same time, and I think that is what is worth capturing on paper.

The sketch above was done during Sanjeev’s activity last year. We used sponges dipped in ink to create those blocks of shapes 之前 we went out sketching. You might recognize those who joined the event in the sketch 😉

Everyone would probably remember the registration on the first day. There was a lot of waiting, and while during that time, I decided to sketch people. In the middle of it all, one of our Singapore sketchers did something that took us all by surprise:

Dr. Lim, or “Uncle Su-Min” took out his ukulele and started singing! With his repertoire of folk tunes and local songs, he helped make the long waiting times much more bearable.

I sketched people during our sketchwalks and workshops/activities too. Recognise any faces?

And like the first picture, I also used the techniques learned during the sessions to sketch our sketchers in their element, like Adrian here from Penang at Delphine’s workshop.

In an urban environment, the people make the place. And as in many things in life, people make the memories. So in the upcoming symposium, why not tell their stories through your drawings, one sketch at a time?
