outside the polling place door

I volunteered at my polling place today in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where we saw double the usual number of voters come to the school building where we vote. Many people, young and old, were voting for the first time. We are a heavily Democratic district, so it was no great surprise to see 301 for Obama to 55 for McCain (and 2 for Nader and 1 for Barr). The most exciting thing to see was the turnout. The day was beautiful – warm with blue skies – and we propped the hall door open so we could look out at the sky and the autumn leaves while we greeted voters.

(For a view facing the other direction, looking into the gymnasium where the voting was going on, here’s the picture I posted mid-day on my own blog.)
