Sketching the Still Life at the Mall Galleries

Yesterday I visited the Mall Galleries in London to see the Annual Exhibition of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.

The Mall Galleries is situated at the top of the Mall (Admiralty Arch end) and is the gallery associated the Federation of British Artists. A lot of the national art societies in the UK hold their annual exhibitions there and it’s worth a visit if you’re in London. [Note: They’ve got website problems at the moment which they’re working on]

I always find I end up sketching people when in the gallery as they have a very nice set up with a refreshment facility and tables and chairs right in the middle of the gallery, where I can sit and drink a cup of tea and contemplate most of the paintings.

The two sketches today are of an elderly gentleman who is an oil painter who loves doing still life paintings. He comes up from Bath to London once a year for this exhibition. How do I know all this? Well I sketched him sketching the still life paintings. Sketching, as we all know, is an instant passport to being able to chat to fellow sketchers so he came over to see what I was up to!
