Despite not spending too much time on the Royal mile, I still love to get lost down some of the closes which fall off Edinburgh’s High street. In the East of Scotland they traditionally mixed ox blood with harling (render) to create a vivid orange colour. The finish to the top right of the drawing below is harling (the scots word comes from the verb to hurl {throw}). It’s a really nice finish – very organic. At the back of the drawing there’s a hidden turret which makes it all very Harry Potter. Can’t wait for the famous mist that envelopes Edinburgh in late winter.
