Joburg Pride

One thing you can be sure of at the annual Gay Pride march, is colour and flamboyance, so I took my sketchbook and watersoluble ink crayons along last Saturday. The parade was so full of action and movement that I’d hardly got a squiggle down before another totally different scenario was playing in front of me. I gave up on that and went to Zoo Lake, where everyone congregated afterwards for music and picnics, and found a spot next to an enormous rainbow flag. The crayons were too slow to work with, so after the first attempt on the left, I just did some quick line sketches and added colour later – besides, I had to find my tube of Opera Rose for that hair and those butterfly wings – nothing else would have done.
