Our middle godchild, the incomparable Molly Hammer, is a wonderful actress and singer–and she had two comp tickets to last night’s show going unused! We threw on decent clothes and made a run for the City…Quality Hill is the oldest “high-toned” area in Kansas City, and it was fun walking around it at night, waiting for the show to open. J. finally went for a coffee quest while I sat and sketched the building across the street from the newly remodeled Quality Hill Playhouse…and we were STILL early, so once they let us in to be seated, I had time to sketch a bit before lights out.
WISH I could have sketched Molly too, but although the lighting was great on HER, it wasn’t on my page.
The show is “Curtain Up”, and if you get the chance, GO. J. Kent Barhart directed, played piano and narrated; Seth Golay, Izzie Baldwin, Barnhart and our own Molly sang some great show tunes–Molly got brought out for another bow for her knockout rendition of “Can’t Help Lovin’ That Man,” from Showboat.
The playhouse at 10th and Central is really still being remodeled, we’re told, but the lobby, restrooms, and theatre itself are done. Comfortable, good acoustics, wonderful grand piano. Full house, on a Sunday night, too…we were lucky!
And the City at night is always a treat…it’s not a HUGE city, but it’s a lovely one…
