We hold monthly sketchcrawls here in Davis, California (called “Let’s Draw Davis!”), and this month’s one, held a week before the worldwide ‘crawl, was held on a lovely spring Saturday along historic G Street. There were about fourteen of us out sketching, and I chatted with locals passing by while drawing the intersection of 2nd and G Streets, above. I had never drawn that building above, but I have seen it in many very old photos of Davis.
I have long wanted to draw this historic monument as well, this phone box outside the Wunderbar, the old G Street pub. Public payphones are a dying breed. The touchscreen didn’t work though so I’ve no idea how people might use them.
Here are a couple of international sketchers, one from Iran and one from Spain. People come from all over the world to draw Davis!
We finished off meeting outside the Davis Co-Op, where those who remained spread their sketchbooks. It really is a delight to see how others have interpreted the places you may also have been drawing. (I particularly loved Alison (Pica)’s amazing accordion sketchbook, seen above, and for a closer look check out her flickr pages). This is why I love sketchcrawls! And like I explained to one fellow who was interested in what we were doing, that it’s only really half about the drawing, and half about the observing, the really looking at the place where you live.
