Demo 5: How to Sketch with Water-Soluble Crayons (Caran d’Ache Neocolor II)

Demo Presenter: Vincent Desplanche

Anyone who purchased or was offered a box of water-soluble crayons may have experienced a terrible disappointment. The hues are often definitively flashy and sometimes they get worse after a wash. And, in addition, you can’t dilute completely the colour, marks of friction always remain under the wash.

Unless you buy the complete collection of the brand, you won’t be able to use these crayons differently than simple crayons without a single drop of water. Then, most of the time, such boxes of 12 mis-assorted tints stay in the drawer of your desk after a couple of unsuccessful exits.

Unfortunately, water-soluble crayons don’t have the fate they deserve.

In this demo, through a couple of sketches I will share with the audience the characteristics of my use of these crayons.

  • Water-soluble crayon, a great approach of watercolour for beginners.
  • Water-soluble crayon, a perfect all-in-one tool for sketchers.
  • Water-soluble crayon, a multipurpose technique for advanced artists

This demo will be also the occasion to present fundamental topics in watercolour sketching : transparency vs opacity, combine several techniques in one sketch, use different bristle brushes, try and compare several brands of crayons .
