Art Deco and tea in Killarney

[by Cathy Gatland in Johannesburg] On a gorgeous (not too cooking hot!) Saturday our sketching group went to the ‘Flatlands’ suburb of Killarney, which in spite of almost entirely consisting of big blocks of flats, or apartments, manages to be both pretty with its tree-lined streets and occasional Art Deco heritage buildings, and welcoming with lots of people strolling the streets and parks and many stopping to look and chat.

After sketching the elegant Whitehall Court building opposite the park and a couple of passers by, we were invited by visiting sketcher Fiver Löcker, who is staying in Killarney on this extended (yay!) visit to her flat for tea, cake and sketching from her balcony. A huge expanse of sky greeted us, with a broad flat vista of the Northern suburbs. I picked just a small section to sketch, leaving the sky for a better paper day – looking down every now and then and swapping my cityscape for another sketchbook to catch some figures passing below.

I had to photograph these sketches as our internet and network/scanner at home is not working, so quality may be a bit off – though I think the gutter section of the sketchbook comes out better this way!
