The river cuts through

 Rivers in  Madeira Island are absolutely dramatic.

Very steep,
cut directly on the rock by the mighty water that, during the storms, runs
furiously down carrying trees, stones, houses, … Something tragic enough for
the lyrics of a fado, the sorrowful typical Portuguese folk song.
