Urban Sketchers, an all-volunteer nonprofit group dedicated to fostering a global community of artists who draw on-location. As drawing skills develop, so does the appreciation for the visited places. Observational drawing is a continuous practice and also a kind of meditation. Sketching can be also a terrific way to meet local people. Although a solitary activity, it becomes social when you share with people or meet to draw together. It functions as an ice breaker to start conversations and sharpen connections with the local community. Also, for the new sketcher intimidated to explore the city alone, the group can provide an excellent support to overcome the fear to draw in public. I will invite fellow sketchers to see the city with the eyes of an “andarilho”, a word in Portuguese meaning the wanderer, an explorer discovering new territory.
During the workshop, participants will learn to:
- analyze and synthesize what they see to make decisions before lay their composition on paper through thumbnail sketch exercises.
- evaluate the benefits of using a minimal color palette and evoke mood and movement.
- participants will learn new skills and complete a sketch based on their own ability and interests while nurturing their inherent artistic voices.
