The Nostalgic Pearl’s Hill Upper Barracks

My piece is from our February sketchwalk at Pearl’s Hill Upper Barracks.

The space used to be Operations Centre for the Singapore police post, who vacated the building in 2001. In its heyday, the place had seen much action as it handled street riots in Singapore’s racially-turbulent past, merely decades ago.

Today it stands as a testament to the importance of racial harmony that Singapore is now known for. And how fitting that it’s being used as an art enclave with many studios and such, ‘cos art transcends boundaries and unites people.

Sadly it’s slated to be demolished in the name of urban redevelopment.

A lovely city to live and work in as it may be, one thing about Singapore is the fast-changing landscape; scenes do not stay the same for very long, all in the name of progress and economic development.

Glad we got to come and sketch this place before it is no more. 🫰🏼🥲
