Urban Sketchers is on the hunt for a new Treasurer. The Treasurer is a key member of the organization’s Executive Board and will be involved in strategic planning as well as the day-to-day financial operations.
Urban Sketchers’ current Treasurer, Kris Mordecai, will provide onboarding and transition for the new treasurer.
Role Overview:
The Treasurer is responsible for the overall financial health of Urban Sketchers. This includes managing our bank accounts and credit card accounts, ensuring that bills are paid on time, receiving the mail at a post office box, creating the annual budget, and monitoring Urban Sketchers’ financial activities. The Treasurer is also responsible for the annual filing of our nonprofit tax return (with the support of a paid accountant) and the annual renewals of our insurance policies (with the support of a broker).
Being a member of the EB requires attendance at our monthly meetings via video chat. The board typically meets in-person twice a year, at an in-person board meeting at the Symposium and once more, 6 months after.

Key Responsibilities
- Budget:
- Work with the Executive Board to develop a balanced operating budget each year, using Microsoft Excel.
- Report on budget-vs-actuals midyear and at end of year
- Financial reporting:
- Coordinate with the bookkeeper (a paid contractor) to receive monthly financial statements
- Read, understand, and report out on the statements to the EB at each monthly meeting.
- Manage Expenses: Pay Urban Sketchers’ bills on a monthly basis and keep track of all receipts
- Coordinate with the accountant (a paid contractor) on annual tax filings
- Symposium Support:
- Work with the Symposium Finance volunteer to ensure that the Symposium budget is created and maintained.
- Support with Symposium ticketing by processing refunds and ensuring that
- With the Symposium Finance volunteer, coordinate the annual Silent Auction and Raffle
- Sponsorship and Fundraising Support: Work with the Fundraising and Sponsorship team to invoice sponsors and keep track of incoming payments.
- Risk Management:
- Renew Urban Sketchers’ insurance policies annually with the support of our brokers.
- Responds to questions from USk Chapters about insurance coverage as needed, with the support of brokers.
- Finance Committee: Chairs the Finance Committee.
Experience we are seeking:
- 1+ year of volunteer experience with Urban Sketchers in a group setting
- Well versed with Excel and Google spreadsheets
- A definite plus but not required:
- Experience in finance, accounting, bookkeeping, or a related field.
- Knowledge of nonprofit financial management.
- Familiarity with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks)

- People-oriented: You enjoy interacting with people and working collaboratively. You are comfortable communicating financial information to “non-financial people.”
- Because Urban Sketchers is incorporated in the United States and must file taxes in the United States, for this role it is required that candidates are located in the US and have a valid US social security number.
