Impression of the Carnaval Parade in Maastricht, in the Netherlands.
This parade is different to the other parades in this area. Most parades here are well organised, with brass bands, colourful wagons and large dressed up groups.
But in Maastricht it’s an anarchistic collection of beautifully and colourful dressed people and groups, accompanied by samba drumbands and “zaate herremeniekes” (drunken brass bands). They all walk the route towards the Vrijthof, which is the central square. After arrival they spread all over town, and play their loud music. It’s called the “boonte storrem”: the colourful storm. It was snowing and bitterly cold when I drew this.
