At the east end of via dei Tribunali, the roman city decumanus, Castel Capuano housed until recently the Naples Hall of Justice. Built in the 12th century, it has been a hall of justice and a prison since 16th century, under the Spanish viceroyship. I was asked to sketch this view to present its renovation project as a museum, connected to the old city and part of a new touristic itinerary. Its clock and the tower can be seen from a distance as a vanishing point of this narrow and crowded old street.
Inside the castle, in the old prisons, we went to sketch the weird “corpus delicti” collection during last spring Urban Sketchers workshop.
