day one

Correspondent: a nice job, but busy. Always running behind to draw everything that happens, and not missing anyone (because that is expected of you). And sometimes a drawing fails badly and I can’t redo it because I have to draw somewhere else, but everyone is always so positive that it doesn’t really matter whether I like it or not. And in the evening there is always a drink and draw somewhere, where you end up at a table with unknown sketchers, and only after hours do you realize: these people speak Portuguese (or Chinese, or something that resembles English but with no single understandable word in it ) … and […]

Day One Video Recap (Oct. 9, 2024)

It’s here! The symposium is underway and the day was a full one. Watch behind the scenes at all the happenings and hear what staff, faculty and attendees are looking forward to in the days ahead.

Maté for beginners

It started with a workshop for schoolchildren. Being a correspondent is hard work. You have to be constantly on your toes and you never know in advance whether you will get five minutes or an hour to draw a situation with a decor that may or may not be complicated, between 10 and 75 characters who are involved in all kinds of actions, and at the same time you also want to make it look a bit atmospheric and casual. ,To walk and sketch at the same time … 8The hub, at Università Católica Argentina During part two of the program, the maté ceremony with the instructors and the organizers, […]

Tourist trap

Two days before the start of the Symposium. After some meetings in the morning, had a free afternoon. Took the bus to La Boca, but took the wrong bus. So arrived on the other shore of the River. A popular neighbourhood with tin houses, industry, and beautiful trees. But it was clear to me that here I would not meet other sketchers, so walked back over the high bridge to La Boca. Here I met a crowd of sketchers, colourfull houses, flowering trees. But in a certain way I was a bit disappointed. This is a real tourist trap. As I was highly concentrated, I continued sketching until all sketchers […]

Meet USk Symposium Local Sketch Correspondent, Olano Ignacio!

On home ground, Ignacio Olano will be capturing the Urban Sketchers International Symposium Buenos Aires 2024 experience. With two decades of teaching Architecture History in Buenos Aires and leading immersive city tours to read architectural spaces on location, Ignacio brings a unique perspective to the Symposium.  By analyzing Buenos Aires’ architectural fabric from both emotional and analytical lenses, he offers a deep understanding of the city’s built environment which is invaluable for his reportage of the Symposium, our team of correspondents, and anyone he happens to draw or walk with. He is a seasoned architect, professor, urban sketcher, and author of various articles in architectural magazines based on his travel notebooks. Watch out for […]

Warming up

Within 3 days the symposium starts. Although I didn’t sleep for more than two hours on the plane last night, and despite the jetlag, I don’t waste any time and start warming up right away. And honestly, I don’t think there will be a lack of inspiration in Buenos Aires, so these few extra days are a gift. By the way, the city isstarting to fill up with sketchers who couldn’t wait until Thursday.

On our way to Buenos Aires

Brussels, october 6Hi, I am Jeroen, and I am leaving for Buenos Aires as USK Symposium correspondent. I met up this afternoon with Ludi in Brussels Airport, and took a last Belgian beer before leaving for Madrid. On the pictures: a last quick sketch from Belgium. Now we arrived in Madrid. Round midnight we will leave for Buenos Aires. So we have a lot of time to sketch the Aeropuerto Adolfo Suárez. For once I wish it were already Monday. In Madrid we met Mohan and Annette.  We had to wait five hours for our flight to BA. Ludi was very impressed by the beautiful ceilings of Madrid airport, so […]
