南米への旅-その1、ブエノスアイレス。

[By Marina Grechanik, in Buenos Aires] It’s almost 3 weeks I’m back from our family trip to South America. It was my first time in this continent, we were travelling for a 3 weeks, landed in Buenos Aires, then went to Montevideo for a family wedding, and after that traveled to Brazil ( Rio and Paraty). It was a very colorful trip, full of various places and situations. I wish I could sketch everywhere we went. But of course it was impossible , I wasn’t alone, and a lot of great moments will remain in my memory. But, I’m happy and grateful for the sketches I could make during the trip, they […]

“La Redonda” in Buenos Aires

By its shape, it is the only circular church there in Buenos Aires. And that made the popularly known as “la Redonda of Belgrano”. But the Immaculate Conception Church is in that neighborhood has much more to this curious singularity: it was and is the symbol of this area of Buenos Aires from the days when those places were part of a neighboring village to the city, that even used to be summer resort for some “porteñas” families. What was this bold design? With marked Renaissance influence, the church is notable for its symmetrical visual sense and strength, topped by a large dome (21 meters diameter) that frames the central […]

Buenos Aires’ Coffee Shops

There are cities that one likes to visit and others that seem perfect to live in. Sometimes a city can combine the two. Buenos Aires is one of those cities. Even in the central and more touristic neighbourhoods there are all kinds of commerce, various services, restaurants, culture centres, schools, green spaces, and…coffee shops. And they’re all kind of coffee shops: big, small, plain, and luxurious, with or without live music. I draw several of them. Here are three.

There’s a lot of Brooklyn in Buenos Aires and a lot of Buenos Aires in Brooklyn.

My husband and I have been spending a good part of the summer in Buenos Aires for a number of years. At this point it almost feels like home. And it’s always a bit of a culture wrench when we transfer between Brooklyn and Buenos Aires. One of the last drawings of summer in Buenos Aires: one of our favorite places in that city: one of the greenhouses in the Botanical Garden. Back home in Brooklyn, reunited with my scanner, back home in Brooklyn. It deserves a portrait: I’ve missed it so much. Nothing takes the place of this little machine. And back on the F train in Brooklyn.I do […]

ブエノスアイレスの風景

This building is the Navy Hospital, designed by Clorindo Testa, who died a few months ago Slender concrete columns protrude from a blue tiled cladding On a cold winter day, I made an outline with  Inkling pen and  then finished digitally painted In spite of the fact that Buenos Aires is a city of square blocks , has some diagonals that produce crossroads with 6 or more corners I enjoy depicting the alterations of the urban fabric Barrio Parque Chas has circular  streets, Berlin is one of them Shaded alley on siesta time

We’re just back from our summer in Buenos Aires. A visit, though wonderful as always, punctuated with minor catastrophes: like the broken pipe that met us in the apartment we rent. We spent the first two days standing by while the repair was made. Important, since the building’s heating system had to be shut off and it’s winter there. The hole left by the pipe replacement was very picturesque, or at least I thought so. The hole in the wall has two faces. It certainly lent our surroundings some mystery. Sketchblog:  DayBooks We had plans to convene with Norberto Dorantes and other artists…until my husband’s computer crashed. We spent a […]

ブエノスアイレスでの日常生活に慣れるのは簡単です。

Both my husband and I are summer averse so we travel below the equator when summer comes to New York City. This year it’s been unusually warm here in Buenos Aires — lots of days in the 60s. Can’t call it hot, but it’s disconcerting. Dusk on Billinghurst — I can watch the lights begin to turn on from balcony to balcony in Barrio Norte.  Very typical street view of this part of the city. The botanical garden seems to grow more beautiful every year: greener, lusher.  The once-teeming cat population is thinning dramatically through the adoption neutering programs (for example: https://www.facebook.com/hacefelizaungato?ref=ts&fref=ts).  This is a good thing, though I miss […]
