Drawing has always fascinated me. If my family couldn’t find me when I was a little girl, all they had to do was go to the bookshelf, and there I’d be, drawing in their books! Following a career in teaching, I’ve recently completed tertiary studies in art and am reveling in the time I now have to indulge my lifelong passion. Some of my sketches inspire large-scale works on paper or canvas, but most of them are purely for my own pleasure. Although much of my recent sketching has been centred on my travels, my favourite subjects at home are urban/industrial ones, especially demolition sites, and I find the stories […]
特派員を紹介します。Harshad Arole > インド・プネー
I am neither trained as an architect nor as an artist, which I believe reflects in my urban sketches. I try to compose a view using a juxtaposition of various elements which characterise a particular location. The striking architectural facet of a building will always dominate but if it is complemented by the people, vehicles, trees and small nondescript structures around, the sketch captures the essence of the place and not just the structure. My approach to drawing as a collection of features has also shaped the way I arrange the various items on a planar basis to establish the depth in sketches. Jogeshwari Colour fascinates me and plays a […]
特派員の紹介T.K.ジャスティン・ン > 香港
I am an architecture student and I record and share my life and travels through my sketches. I started sketching on location in 2013 and I have since fallen in love with it. Through each drawing, I observe, distill, and record the places I visit. This allows me to gain a far deeper understanding of my surrounding, from the architecture and culture to people I meet on the streets. All of these, in turn, influence the drawing, giving it life and energy. As an aspiring architect, each sketch teaches me a new lesson on architecture and design, influencing each project I work on. Stanley Park Totem I dream of having […]

I live in Santiago de Chile. I am a founding member of Urban Sketchers Chile, a graphic designer and tour guide for German speaking tourists that visit Santiago, Valparaiso Port and the surrounding vineyard valleys. As a graphic designer I worked for many years in the graphic and advertising industry. But inside of me there was that voice that urged me to create art. So, one day I took the risk to pursue that dream as an independent artist and illustrator. Since making the change I have illustrated books, captured cultural events, created postcards and souvenirs from Chile. I describe myself as “a drawer that watercolors,” because I am in […]
Meet the correspondent: Fred Baele > Harare, Zimbabwe
My name is Fred. I have found peace in drawing for as long as I can remember. Some years ago, when I started working, I stopped drawing regularly, then altogether. I had many excuses: kids, responsibilities, things… but I just really lost something within myself. I only started back sometime in 2012. All this to say that I am still recovering. It sounds like a dirty confession. I am a social worker, living in Harare, Zimbabwe, with my wife and children. I am entrusted with a job that takes me all over the world: often in places that are off touristic maps, sometimes they make the news, or not anymore. […]
Meet the Correspondent: Peggy Wong > Kuching, Malaysia
Trained as an architect, I have an innate passion for the built environment. I started sketching as a form of observation and documenting the disappearing architecture of our past, in my hometown Kuching, on the island of Borneo. I keep a sketch journal to document daily things, travel stories and design ideas. Kuching, Old Town Sketching is my form of therapeutic self-expression. I am easily distracted and have a short attention span, but making myself stay still and focus on the scene allows me to slow down and absorb my surroundings otherwise missed when I rush through my days. This is my form of meditation. I was introduced to the […]
Meet the correspondent: Béliza Mendes > Luxembourg
I live in Luxembourg, one of the smallest countries of the world, lost between its big neighbours, France, Belgium and Germany. In our corner of Europe it is easy to be overlooked and even people driving through might miss the fact that they have been here. It is, however, a beautiful country rich in history that has seen many different rules over the centuries and has still managed to remain what it is. “We want to remain what we are” is the country’s motto. As far as I remember, I have always enjoyed drawing. I did not have the confidence to pursue art as a career, but the idea of […]

“The dictionary says that a hobby is “an activity or interest pursued for pleasure or relaxation.” Although urban sketching certainly provides both pleasure and relaxation, I don’t think of it as my hobby. I think of it more as a way of life – something that has become such a normal part of my everydayness that it shapes how I view the world. For most of my life I had both the fear of drawing as well as the desire to draw. In 2011, inspired by Gabi Campanario’s Seattle Sketcher column, I finally decided to overcome the fear. His drawings of Seattle – my birthplace and lifelong home – were […]

At kindergarten I appeared to be no good for much except drawing. I studied graphic arts at Sint-Lucas in Ghent, and later taught in the art school in Nyundo, Rwanda. I publish graphic novels and short stories, and work for magazines, such as Zone 5300 (NL), Mo* (B) and XXI (F). I am currently working on a graphic novel, Abadaringi, about the art school in Rwanda where I taught. It is about the people of the art school I knew before the genocide, those I met again after it, and the new students and teachers. My drawing below shows a sketch lesson in the beautiful school garden being taught by […]

As an architect I do a lot of drafting, that is floor plans, elevations, sections and construction details. It does include perspectives, and lots of rough sketches, investigations to find the right solution. It’s time consuming work and it is all about producing a correct accurate set of plans to construct a building. Once the building is there, the drawings are done with, nothing to feel precious about, especially now since they are computer drawn. No beautifully considered hand drawings on tracing paper, those days are gone. What has this got to do with urban sketching? To me it is integral, I place my urban sketching in the same category […]

I am a scenographer (stage and set designer) and fine artist living and working in Paris, France. For more than ten years now, I have also been painting and drawing outdoors. In Paris or when traveling, I spend my time painting… I work almost exclusively with watercolors: my favorite tools are a big brush, a little box of watercolors and a large watercolor sketchbook. I have long painted bodies in motion, so when facing a landscape, I look for the same dynamic given by its colors, its light or the inhabitants of the place. I paint in a hurry, as if the subject could disappear at any moment. Urban vistas, […]
