シニアワン-古い鉱山の前哨基地

[by Peggy Wong of Kuching, Borneo] When I was working for a heritage conservation architect, back in 2008, we documented every building in this old mining outpost, called ‘Siniawan’, for fear that it will one day be washed away by the king tide floods, which can reach up to the roof top of these shops.  When the overall drainage and flood mitigation improved, the community also started returning to this old town and life started to flow back into its street.   The sketch on top of this post, done back in 2014, shows the timber shophouses that lined both sides of the old Siniawan street.  When a major Kuching-Bau road […]

Voted for a Better Malaysia

[By Peggy Wong, Sarawak], Malaysians nationwide and some abroad through postal votes, were fulfilling their civic duty by casting their vote for their government. At the General Election polling centres, cameras and mobile phones were forbidden, but there was no explicit instructions about sketching outside the polling rooms. Though the queues were long at the 4 rooms at my polling station, everyone was queuing patiently. I sketched only the queue as the line inched forward steadily. Kueh Seng Onn Temple Procession

Vehicles were dressed up with lights and the back of trucks turned into a stage, with performers dressed in traditional fairy costumes or even like a dragon boat float with the Chinese 24 seasons drums, beating away along the procession route. The procession were made up of a parade of school bands, lion […]

Asia-Link Sketchwalk: Kuching 2017

[By Marni Zainodin in Kuching] I was looking forward to this event, ‘An event for nerds or introverts’ as Peggy put it. In fact, Asia-Link Sketchwalk Kuching 2017, might be the best thing for introverts to get together and be extroverted together. Sketchers like ourselves love it when Asian regional chapters come together to sketch and share, learning and discovering through one sketch at a time. All four days were full of sketchwalks, sharetalks and eating delicious Kuching delicacies. It was lively, full of joy and fun, mingling and getting to know each other. As urban sketchers, we normally share through social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram or Flickr, […]
