On November 2023 in Ecuador, we celebrated the first regional encounter of Ecuadorian Urban Sketchers in the city of Cuenca. During the 3 days, Urban Sketchers Quito, Cuenca, Guayaquil along with special guests from Colombia and Brazil sketched different parts of this city.
Cuenca, located in the southern region of Ecuador, is known for its rich history, culture, and architecture. It is the third largest city in the country and is famous for its well-preserved historic center, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
Being my first time in Cuenca, the historic center was definitely my first stop for a sketch. The imposing Cuenca Cathedral, famous among locals and tourists alike, was the first thing that caught my attention.
The Cathedral is a combination of architectural styles, with neo-Gothic, Renaissance, and Romanesque influences, and is an architectural and artistic landmark, attracting tourists and worshipers alike. Its location in the heart of Cuenca’s historic center makes it a meeting place and a symbol of the city’s identity and cultural heritage.
.
My next stop was the Turi viewpoint, located in the parish of Turi, southeast of the city center, offering a spectacular panoramic view of Cuenca and its surroundings. in which I could not resist painting its church and the panoramic view of the city.
