It was late October when Maya-san, one of Urban Sketcher Japan blog contributors who live in Amakusa, and I started planning to hold Urban Sketching event in Amakusa, Kumamoto, while the number of Covid 19 infection has been decreasing dramatically. Since then we built up our plans through Line chat and Zoom meetings. Our plan of workshop called【Wink, Squint and Appreciate】was approved by USK at late November, then within a month we did it! Here I share story from Maya-san how she has started Urban Sketching event in Amakusa, and my story of visiting and giving workshop there.

ズーム越しにしか知らなかった人に実際に会うというパンデミック時代ならではの経験は、私個人にとっては今回が初だったと思います。
I think this was the first time for me personally to actually meet someone I had only known through a zoom lens, which is a unique experience characteristic of the pandemic era.

そして、実際の対面のワークショップというのも、これまた私個人にとっては初であり、またUSKのワークショップが天草で開催されるのももちろん初、さらにUSK全体でも、パンデミックが始まって以来初めての現場ワークショップということで、今回の企画は色々な意味でプチ歴史的なワークショップでした。
It was also the first time for me to attend a face-to-face workshop, the first time for USK to hold a workshop in Amakusa, and the first time for USK as a whole to hold an on-site workshop since the beginning of the pandemic. In many ways, this was a petit-historical workshop.

これ以前に、私たちは、パンデミックでも何か繋がれる方法はないかと模索する中で、#remoteuskjというイベントも一度開催して、関東方面の人たちと、バーチャルだけどライブで同じ風景を描くという、これもまた非常に面白い経験をしていました。
Prior to this, we had also held an event called #remoteuskj once, in our search for a way to connect even in the midst of a pandemic, and had another very interesting experience of painting the same landscape virtually and simultaneously with people in the Kanto area.

この時は、天草でスケッチ会を開いている間に、15分だけ現場から風景をライブ中継して一緒に描く、という形でした。アーバンスケッチャーらしく画面と机の様子ごと描いたりしている参加者もいて、上がって来たスケッチから、さまざまなレベルで現実を捉える視点を見比べることができました。
During the sketching session in Amakusa, we did a 15-minute live broadcast of the landscape from the site and drew together. Some participants drew the screen and the desk also, in the orthodox tradition of urban sketching, and from the sketches that came in, we were able to compare various interpretations of reality.
オンラインで色々な工夫をすることももちろん面白いですが、同時に、実際に会って、実際に旅をするということは、やはり迫力があって熱量が高く、五感全体で感じ取れるものがあるので、与え合う影響というのがオンラインよりもまたやっぱり一段深く、濃いのだなということを今回の現場ワークショップで実感できました。
Of course, as it is interesting to use the online platform in different ways, meeting in person and traveling in person is also very powerful and intense, as you can feel things with all five senses.

パンデミックが落ち着いているこのタイミングで、それまで会えなかったからこそたくさん蓄積されていたとも言える熱の籠った情報を交換できたことをとてもありがたく思います。
I am very grateful that we were able to exchange highly heated information in person, at this time when the pandemic is luckily mostly under control here in Japan.
今後ますます状況が改善されたら、海外からもスケッチャーを迎え入れて、かつて台風から逃れて来た外国船に安息を与えたことがきっかけで隠れキリシタン文化が生まれたと言われる歴史とロマンに溢れるこの美しい土地で、再びイベントが開催できることを望んでいます。
If the situation improves even more in the future, I hope we can welcome sketchers from abroad and hold another event in this beautiful land full of history where it is said that the hidden Christian culture was born when foreign ships fleeing typhoons were welcomed in to take refuge.

Wink, Squint and Appreciate (天草スケッチinさきつ）のワークショップは14名の参加者さんと、地元の方の多方面のご協力と、天草のスケッチグループのチームワークのおかげで無事に開催することができました。ものすごく寒くなり、参加者さんの体調がとても気になった現場でしたが、寒さを忘れるほど夢中になる瞬間があったと話してくださった方や、寝袋を用意されてスケッチに挑んだ方までいて、みなさんが盛り立ててくださって、とてもいい雰囲気の中でさせていただきました。感謝でいっぱいです。ありがとうございました！
We had 14 participants as well as Amakusa sketch group members ( as helping hands) in Workshop in the cold day.Thanks to local community and Amakusa ( USK Japan) members, it turned out to be a blast. One participant says she hasn’t felt coldness because she was so deep in sketching, one person brought sleeping bag to keep her warm…I’m thankful about everyone’s nice vibration which boosted the ambience so joyful.
天草のスケッチャーのマヤさんに、年内に天草でスケッチワークショップをしに来ませんか？とのお誘いで始まった天草行き。天気予報では行く前日は18℃、行った日が13℃、ワークショップ当日は7℃まで冷え込むと出ていて、屋外での3時間のワークショップを参加者さんが耐えられるのか心配でした。
しかも天草上空はフライトが欠航になる可能性もある荒れた天気で、アーバンスケッチの伝道師にはヤキモキさせられるというプチ試練が用意されていましたが、無事に到着できました。空港でマヤさんと初対面。私がレンタカーで走るのは無理だと泣きついたので、その日からマヤさんがお抱えドライバーのようにあちこち乗せていってくれることになりました。マヤさんも移住したばかりでiPhoneのナビアプリを頼りにしてのドライブ、本当にありがとうございまいた！
The weather forecast said temperture will drop drastically. I wondered if the participants could endure such cold temperture during three-hour workshop period. The flight might have been canceled if the sky above Amakusa airport have had harsh condition. Luckily the airplane arrived safely in the airport, so I finally was able to meet Maya-san in person!
Special thanks to Maya- san for driving everyday since then, as well as all the preparations for the event! It was such fun time chatting together endlessly inside the car, at the workshop site, in the restaurant during whole hours.
Wink Squint and Appreciate 天草スケッチinさきつワークショップ当日
ワークショップ当日の午前中はありがたいことに時々晴れ間がありました。みなさん寒さの中、熱心によく話を聞いてくれて、比率や濃淡に意識を集中しています。
On 18th December, the morning session of the workshop began. I was so thankful that we had sunlight ocasionally. People concentrated on listening what I say, carefully measured the relative ratio by closing one eye while using the rear end of a pencil as a measuring device, and squinted to see relative tonal balance…
ランチは天草チームがお願いして作ってもらったお寿司屋さん特製のお弁当を購入。なんてゴージャス。

午後からは雨混じりの曇り空となり、寒さが増したため外で描くのは諦め、その代わり暖房の効いた、窓から教会が見える建物を使わせていただくことにして、窓のフレームを利用して描くやり方で鉛筆スケッチをしていただきました。しかし室内では水彩絵具を使うことができないので、代わりに水彩についてはテラスまで出ていき、そこでデモで描くところを見学していただくスタイルにワークショップの内容を変更。さらに、また室内に戻り、今度は自分が持っていったスケッチブックに描いてあるスケッチ画を見ていただきながら質問に答えるという時間を設けました。
In the afternoon, it got cloudy, rainy, and colder. So we decided to evacuate in a warm building where we still be able to see the top of the church through the window. I changed the contents of the workshop a bit since we were not allowed to use watercolor pigments inside the building. Therefore, first half time I emphasized teaching how to compose the view into sketchbook, how to measure relative ratio, and how to draw correctly angled lines after measuring. Then second half time, we went outside terrace, I gave watercoloring demo more in detail, and then we went bach inside the building, I showed my old sketchbooks to everyone, and I answered questions whenever they had any.
やってみれば駆け足のワークショップでしたが、Wink, Squint and Appreciateのフレーズがprayerのように記憶の片隅に残って、どこかで絵を描くときに手助けになったらなと思います。さらに、描くだけでなく、描いたスケッチをシェアして、自分自身も、見る誰かも楽しむことのできるのがアーバンスケッチの真骨頂ですから、作品を通じてUrban Sketchingの世界を知っていただけたらと思います。Show the world one drawing at a time、です。
また、天草チームが今後色々な人との繋がりやアイディアで、さらにスケッチを通じたイベントを企画してより面白い会をやってくれることを確信しています。
After all, one day workshops went by so quickly. I hope the phrase “Wink, Squint and Appreciate” may remain people’s memory like a prayer, and it serve as a helping hand whenever they draw, when they need.
Moreover, I hope people also enjoy appreciating sketches of their own as well as others through sharing them in Urban Sketching community. That’s the spirit of Urban Sketching!
I’m sure that team Amakusa will come up with really fun sketch events in the future. Because there they have great locations, connections, and ideas!
