The White Lion has its beer garden within the crumbling walls of an old Roman settlement.
The original garrison was probably populated by legionaries from Spain and Romania, and it must have seemed a very dark, cold and damp outpost at the very edge of the Roman Empire… Castlefield was simply known as ‘the castle in the fields’ in medieval times.
It was a dark and wet day when I visited, but that’s supposed to be typical Manchester weather!
Behind the modern buildings is the Museum of Science and Industry. Located on the historic site of the world’s oldest surviving passenger railway station, the museum’s housed in five listed buildings, and its fantastic collection tells the story of Manchester’s scientific and industrial past, present and future.
It also does a good cup of tea and a bun.
