I work Tuesday – Friday, so Monday is my sketching day with, what we call ourselves, the Group of Five, PEI.
This small group has been in existence for five years, and we typically paint together on Mondays throughout the summer months. We often announce in a Facebook group where we are going and any other sketchers/painters are welcome to join.
This past Monday in Stanley Bridge, Prince Edward Island, I experienced those magical summer moments that make outdoor sketching so special.
As I drove around the corner and saw the layered landscape unfold before me, coupled with a colourful “open” flag, I knew where the day’s sketch would be
I parked, grabbed my gear, and walked around for a bit, deciding to focus on what inspired me to stop: the signage with the layers of landscape in the background. I set up my folding stool outside the Willow Café, which is located in a reclaimed church, decided what I would include, and started sketching.
The sun was shining, and I sat in front of a sign that afforded a tiny bit of shade. I became completely immersed in my work, barely noticing the cars passing by. A few friendly folks stopped to chat and inquire about my sketch, adding to the happy of the day.
It was, what my paint pals and I call, a “best day ever”, where art and life blend – and I capture a little bit of the world around us.
