Atafona is a summer romance we insist on living until the very last second. (EN)
When I decided to portray Atafona through the lens of urban sketching, the town was already different from the way I had first encountered it. We walk nearby, find the remains of a window that seems to frame the ocean, but on the next visit it is no longer there. Hence the need to capture the town through drawing, tracing an Atafona that perhaps exists only in the memory of fishermen and those who find in it a summer home.

Only when I challenged myself to draw these urban remnants outdoors did I truly understand the force of the erosion feeding upon the town. I myself felt eroded, with the wind whipping sand against my body and the drawing, while the paper struggled to withstand the sea spray. That experience brought me even closer to the place and made me reflect on what gives the local population, little more than 6,000 inhabitants, the strength to continue living here.
Eu mesmo me senti erodido, o vento chicoteando areia no meu corpo, no desenho, o papel tentando resistir à maresia.

Atafona was founded by fishermen drawn by the abundance of fish. They are people shaped by the violent sea and know it like no one else. In the Fishermen’s Village itself, we find the Church of Nossa Senhora da Penha, painted in a shade of blue that seems determined to remain faithful to the sky, beside the mouth of the Paraíba do Sul River, exactly eight minutes from where the erosion begins. Local legend says that the church marks the limit of the sea; beyond it, the ocean does not advance. I do not know to what extent popular and scientific knowledge meet, but there seems to be a consensus that one day the sea will arrive there. Between the old houses, some already in ruins and others still resisting, fishermen color the landscape with their nets and boats bearing the most picturesque names imaginable.

Along the shoreline, the ruins, true mansions built in eclectic style, become canvases for graffiti and tags, some carrying an apocalyptic tone given the context. During a long walk, we may step into what was once someone’s home. One must be careful not to trip over broken tiles, roof fragments, or even a toilet. Opposing constructions and an endless strip of sand make us reflect on how small and insignificant we truly are.

It is strange to notice that the locals seem to await their sentence, though not passively. They resist by preserving their way of life and denouncing the almost nonexistent attempts by authorities to reverse the disappearance of the town. The population already knows the official discourse: it is necessary to leave the risk areas. The phrase sounds cold and fails to carry its true weight. These people are being asked to abandon perhaps the only home they have ever known, to forget the streets where they ran as children and the houses that endured through generations. To paraphrase Carlos Drummond de Andrade, one of Brazil’s greatest poets, “Atafona will become nothing more than a picture on the wall, and how painful that is!”

Yet it is Carnival, and Atafona, usually quiet and peaceful, comes alive once more, filled with color. Where the river meets the sea, there is music, forró, beer, and celebration. Smiles on people’s faces, bodies dancing, and the joy of having lived through one more day. I do not conclude this project with a motivational message about resilience, although the people of Atafona are the truest representation of that word. What remains is simply my humble record of a struggle for the right to preserve one’s roots, a testimony to the climate consequences caused by our unsustainable way of life, and a reminder of the power collective memory has to move us.
