Marina Del Rey

[By Matt Jones in California]   I’ve been drawing the boats down at Fisherman’s Village in Marina Del Rey. There are yachts and pleasure cruise boats and there’s always plenty of bird-life too awaiting the return of the fishing boats.

Sketching L.A.

More on my IG  Marina Del Rey  The Rainbow Bar n’ Grill on Sunset Strip  Playa Del Rey  Marina Del Rey  Culver City  Venice beach  Santa Monica  Gorgeous old […]

Oz

[By Matt Jones in Melbourne] I recently had the chance to visit Melbourne to teach storyboarding to the animation community there. I managed to explore a bit and do some sketching while exploring this marvellous city.  The iconic Flinders Street Station  The Forum music venue  St. Paul’s  CBD and Prince’s Bridge from the South Bank […]

My first summer in Los Angeles

The fine weather and light has inspired me to try my hand at more colour sketching this summer as I get to know Los Angeles. I’ve been exploring primarily Culver City where I work. There are some quite radical architectural developments especially in the Hayden Tract from architect Eric Owen Moss. This is his ‘Samitaur’ […]

Venice Beach

Memorial Weekend is a perfect time to get out and sketch. I headed down to Venice Beach to draw the sun worshippers, Hare Krishnas, hawkers, skaters, musicians and joggers. I also squeezed in a painted study of one of the cool beach houses.

Return to Oakland

On a flying visit to the Bay Area last weekend I connected with my old sketch buddies Mike Dutton and Matt Cruickshank at Jack London Square in Oakland. We checked out the old saloon bar I’d long wanted to draw – Heinolds’ . . .  . . . it’s compact interior is full of ephemera […]

Downtown L.A.

I took another trip downtown last weekend and joined a sketch party to get access to the upper floors of the famous Bradbury Building. I drew the elevator and the glorious iron-work used in the bannisters. We met up at the Grand Central Market-a great spot for people watching and sketching and eating! I’ve fallen […]

Drawing ‘Bladerunner’ part 2

The Ennis house, Los Feliz. Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and used in Ridley Scott’s ‘Bladerunner’ as Deckard’s apartment. 30 min. quick sketch with pencil and ink pen. Time-lapse film.  Part 1: Drawing the Bradbury Building is here

Drawing Downtown Los Angeles

This weekend I headed to Downtown Los Angeles to see the Bradbury building and draw the iconic interior. Used as a location in countless films and T.V. shows it was most memorably featured in Ridley Scott’s ‘Bladerunner’.

Drawing Venice

Here’s a brief video I cut together of a recent sketch trip to the Venice Canals, Los Angeles. I found a peaceful spot away from the chaos of the sea front and set up a camera to record the drawing. You can see the finished sketch on my personal art blog here

Amongst the tombstones

A sketch-crawl through the vast Peidmont Cemetery. From the top there are beautiful vistas across the Bay Area with downtown Oakland, San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge.  The layout of the cemetery has lovely swooping curves like the shape of an artist’s palette. There are some incredible tombs like the pyramid visible on the left […]

San Francisco Film Shoot

Strolling around the city last weekend I stumbled upon a film shoot in North Beach on Broadway & Kearny, which is apparently one of the most filmed streets in America. The crew had sprayed down fake snow, a sizable crowd ogled proceedings and we watched as the camera crane car did a few practice runs. I couldn’t […]
