Sinterklaas

In the Netherlands most children don’t get their presents for Christmas, but at the anniversary of Saint Nicholas or “Sinterklaas”, december 5th. It’s a very old tradition: Sint is supposed to sail in a steamboat from Spain to Holland, ride on his white horse on the roofs, and with a little help of his servants, the “pieten”, throw the presents through the chimneys. Children believe it all the way, even if they have central heating at home.
In the evenings they put carrots (for the horse) in their shoes at the backdoor, hoping to find some candy in them the next morning.
Some even decorate their windows with self made puppets. I found this window in Merkelbeek, Limburg, and couldn’t resist drawing it.
