Verona

Just back from a short trip to northern Italy, where I managed to get a few drawings done in between (or while) drinking and eating – what a beautiful country…

First stop was Verona and we sat out in the heat of the day drawing across the river, before getting a brilliant spaghetti con aglio e olio in a nearby trattoria.

The view across the river looks out to the castle on a hill and a Roman theatre – though that’s obscured by trees. It was the flame shaped poplars that caught my interest – quintessentially Italian…

We came back to river bank the following evening and found that it was the hang-out for local youth – lots of young couples and groups, laughing, singing, strutting, chatting – all very innocent and unthreatening compared with some places. No Montagues or Capulets in sight.
