Smithsonian Free Museum Day

museumday092609

Hundreds of museums and cultural venues across the United States were free today as part of Smithsonian Free Museum Day. One of them was the Seattle Museum of Flight. We’ve been to it twice before, but the thought of seeing the aerocar for free again was enough to get me out of the house with my kids. It’s got to be one of my favorite museum artifacts of all time. The thing could transform from car to airplane in 15 minutes. According to Wikipedia, a deal to massproduce it fell through when its designer, Moulton Taylor, of Longview, Washington, couldn’t secure at least 500 orders. Between 1949 and 1968 a total of six models were built. One was supposedly still flying as of 2008.

I also put a little extra effort to sketch the statue at the entrance of the museum: “Team Effort.”
