Eland

Following on Gabi’s post on Art on the street, I went this quiet Sunday morning to sketch our Eland – a huge sculpture at one of the ‘gateway’ points into the city. It’s one of a number of new public artworks that have been erected over the last couple of years. This “slightly forlorn image” in the words of the artist Clive van den Berg, recalls a time only about 130 years ago when animals like this roamed these hills, and the plants that sprout from it’s flanks were the unmanicured vegetation. It gazes over the road towards the University of the Witwatersrand – and hopefully a bright future.
