San Fernando Cathedral

Maybe this drawing is getting too far from the idea of an urban “sketch” but as it was done on site like my other work I suppose it qualifies.

San Fernando Cathedral in downtown San Antonio is the oldest continuously functioning cathedral sanctuary in the United States as well as the oldest standing church in Texas.  It was founded in 1731 by Canary Island settlers and the original adobe sanctuary (which still stands and makes up the apse of the current church) was built between 1738 and 1750.  The Gothic style facade and nave in the sketch were added in 1868.  I recently got a job working downtown so I’ve had a lot more opportunities to sketch buildings like this.
