Red Hill Urban Sketching April 2011 (Singapore)

Despite of the heavy downpour in the morning, many sketchers came on time to this location named Red Hill, the name derived from a folk lore about a murder that happened eons ago. Anyway, Red Hill is one of the older housing estate in Singapore, mainly comprising of subsidized housings about 90sqm in size. Many of the residents were relocated from kampongs during the 70s or the 80s… most of them have lived more than 50 decades already and maybe 30 years here in Red Hill. The estate has long become self contained with its own shopping mall, train station, food and wet market, which is one of the largest in Singapore too.

This location was chosen because it is pretty accessible by train while it has quite interesting old looking flats, lotsa elderly people, and very unique ambience. I loved the pavilion where the elderlies would congregate to chill or to have a game of Chinese chess.
