Symposium Opening

 Terceiro dia na capital portuguesa, foi bonito chegar cedinho e ver, no pátio da Universidade de Belas Artes de Lisboa, tantos desenhistas reunidos provindos de diversas partes do globo. Logo de cara me deparei com o sketckbook do Gérard Michel, inacreditável, todos concordamos que ele é um deus do traço, um deus simpático e sorridente.

De lá fomos todos para o auditório onde o Gabriel Campanario e Isabel Fiadeiro deram as boas-vindas e falaram um pouco sobre este encontro.

Feito isso, cada instrutor se reuniu com sua respectiva turma de alunos. Fui até onde estava Frank Ching e o Pedro Cabral. O workshop dos dois se chama “Explorar o Chiado” e visa levar aos alunos a descobrir, através do processo do desenho e do contato com o local, descobrir o que leva o Chiado a ser um local tão especial e único.

Sua turma reunia arquitetos, designers e professores. Feitas as apresentações fomos para o Chiado desenhar. Conheci a professora Marina, brasileira radicada em Portugal há mais de 35 anos. Desenhamos lado a lado e conversamos um pouco sobre o Brasil e Portugal.

O Gabriel Campanario chegou por ali e juntos seguimos para o Cais do Sodré onde o Eduardo Salavisa e a Mônica Cid estavam ministrando o workshop de “Captar movimentos com esboços rápidos”. No caminho, íamos admirando a bela arquitetura lisboeta. Chegamos ao local e encontramos um grupo reunido debaixo da sombra de uma árvore, todos juntos pra se esconder do Sol, que a essa hora estava muito forte. Dentro da estação me encontrei com o Eduardo Salavisa que me explicou um pouco sobre os exercícios que eles pediram para os alunos: desenho gestual, rápido, tentando captar os movimentos. Peguei meu caderno e comecei a rabiscar enquanto outras pessoas também me retratavam desenhando; comecei a fazer o mesmo e logo a coisa toda parecia um duelo de canetas. Calor, calor, calor…

Paramos para almoçar e voltamos a nos encontrar às 14h30, mas antes conheci o Nuno, um cara muito legal que me deu uma rápida aula de história portuguesa, me explicou porque existem tantos Nunos em Portugal e tão poucos ou nenhum na Espanha… mas essa história é longa, no entanto, se quiser saber mais, pergunte para o Nuno. Valeu, Nuno!

Almoço rápido. Encontrei o Pedro Fernandes no restaurante. Batemos um papo, pretendo visitar seu workshop amanhã. Assistimos a duas palestras no auditório “Do desenho em grupo à exibição colectiva” com a Tia Boon e “Passando, parando, caminhando: desenho urbano em contexto”. Terminada a palestra, segui para o workshop “Capturar atmosferas”, nas Escadinhas do Duque, com Norberto Dorantes e Mário Linhares, também dois mestres… Ufa… Amanhã tem mais.

Third day in the Portuguese capital, it was beautiful to get early and see, in the courtyard of the Lisbon Fine Arts University, so many drawers coming from several parts of the globe, all brought together. Right away I came across the Gérard Michel sketchbook, unbelievable, we all agree that he is a god of the trace, a friendly and smiling god.

From there we all went to the auditorium where Gabriel Campanario and Isabel Fiadeiro gave the welcome and talked a bit about this meeting. After that, each instructor met their respective class of students. Then I went to Frank Ching and  Pedro Cabral workshop which is called “Explore the Chiado” and aims to lead students to find out, through the drawing process and contact with the place, what makes Chiado a place so special and unique. Their class brings together architects, designers and teachers. After the introductions we went to the Chiado to make some drawings. I met Professor Marina, a Brazilian rooted in Portugal for over 35 years. We drew side by side and talked a little about Brazil and Portugal.

Gabriel Campanario came along and together we went to the Cais do Sodre where Eduardo Salavisa and Monica Cid were providing the workshop “Capturing movements with quick sketches”. On the way, we were admiring the beautiful architecture of Lisbon. We arrived at the place and found a group gathered under the shade of a tree, all together in order to hide from the sun, which at that time was pretty strong. Inside the station I met Eduardo Salavisa who explained a little about the exercises that they gave to the students: gesture drawing, fast, trying to capture the movements. I grabbed my notebook and started doodling while others also portrayed me drawing, I began to do the same and soon the whole thing looked like a duel of pens. Heat, heat, heat …

We stopped for lunch and we met again at 14:30, but before I met Nuno, a nice guy who gave me a quick lesson about Portuguese history, and explained to me why there are so many Nunos in Portugal and so few or none in Spain … but that’s a long story, however, if you want to know more, ask Nuno. Quick lunch. I found Pedro Fernandes in the restaurant. We chatted a little, I intend to visit his workshop tomorrow. We attended two lectures in the auditorium “From group drawing to collective exhibition” with Tia Boon and “Passing, stopping, walking, urban drawing in context.” After the lecture, I headed for the workshop “Capturing atmospheres,” in the Escadinhas do Duke, with Norberto Dorantes and Mário Linhares, also two masters … Phew … There will be more tomorrow.
