We were taking shelter from the heavy downpour this morning as we were going about sketching Telok Ayer Street during the sketch walk event in conjunction with the USK SG Vol 1 Book Launch & Exhibition @ URA.
I was sketching this hiding with the others in a cosy kopi tiam (or traditional coffeeshop) while it rained cats and dogs. We could see Thien Hock Kheng temple from where we were. The temple was one of the oldest in Singapore history built in the 19th century by the Chinese immigrants who have traveled from China mainland. They built the temple to give thanks to their gods for blessing them with a safe trip to Singapore.
I did something different this time. Using a triadic gray with a warm tint, I painted over the pen & ink sketch balancing the brighter colors on the roof, columns and lanterns. I was pretty pleased with this little experiment I did during the unexpected heavy down pour – inspired by all that wetness.

Here’s a first sketch I did this morning during the sketch walk at Telok Ayer Street. It started to drizzle so I hid underneath a shelter made of twines. When it rained harder I have to stop, closeup up my page while it is still wet to run to a nearby coffeeshop where I finished the painting, after which I did another (above) looking out of the coffeeshop door front.
