In Tokyo one day we stopped for a breather by the busy temple complex in Asakusa. I sat drawing and after a little while was politely approached by a man. Neither young nor old, but with a lived-in face, he spoke very good English, and we were soon in conversation. His name is Hideo Asano, and he is awell-travelled poet, trying to make a living in Tokyo. As we spoke I added him into my sketch.
He gave me a copy of a booklet of his haikus. And then of course I bought a copy of his Traveller’s Poems.
Here’s one I like:
A torrential rain
Pushing man into a pub
To keep him drinking
