documenta (13) Kassel

My first 10 years in Germany I had lived in Kassel. For me this city in the middle of the country feels like home. Kassel has been especially known as the host for the Documenta which is one of the most important exhibitions of contemporary art that takes place every five years. Art lovers from all around the world come to see it and the city transforms into a fascinating place.

On the top right is the Kulturbahnhof with the Himmelsturmer (the figure of a guy climbing on a pole toward the sky), one of the many remains of the past Documentas. On the left bottom, the Fridericianum the oldest public museum in Europe. You can see in the background the Opera House.

It started raining and the people took shelter under the portico of the Fridericianum

Sometimes the view outside of the window is more interesting than the art in the room. Here is the Kassel skyline from the Zwehrenturm. My first time there!

Documenta Halle

Inside the Documenta Hall. Built by Jourdan and Mueller. This is the main room.

I liked the exhibition in the back room. It was a play of shadows. It allowed me to catch people in interesting postures.

Many of the art pieces are spread around in the Karlsaue which is a beautiful big park, 5 minute walk from the city center. It took me a lot of time to see it all. Next time I will rent a bike. I loved this pavillion with a project of Paul Ryan. It was a workshop of a dynamic collaboration between three people groups (Threeing). As I was reading through the provided information, I was pleased to find out that Veronica Lawlord had done the graphic design for the posters. Isn’t that a coincidence?

I was so lucky that this woman, dressed in the beautiful outfit decided to rest in front of me. Have you ever had an experience like that?
