Vienna

Vienna from the Prater

A few weeks ago I had a nice long weekend with some friends in Vienna, Austria. I will admit I had a wrong idea of the city, too much Richard Strauss, Wiener Schnitzel and Sissi.

PraterBut in fact it was a very lively city, with a beautiful centre full of fine shops, markets, terraces and restaurants with excellent food (including the best schnitzels I ever had).

And yes, there is a considerable amount of palaces, castles and Sissi, but never as boring as I expected it to be.

I also went into the Prater, the Ferris wheel featuring in the 50’s movie “the third man”.

I managed to make the above overview of the city in the 10 minutes it took the wheel to make one full spin, you can see me in action on the photo.

Other highlights were the buildings by the late architect Hundertwasser. Not quite my style, but always fascinating. If you ever go there, don’t miss the terrace in the back courtyard of Kunsthaus Wien, and have a nice espresso amidst the coloured Hundertwasser architecture. The best way to do a sketch.
