Borough Market, London Bridge

Borough Market in south London is a wholesale and retail food market that records suggest has existed for more than 1,000 years. (It is easy to find because it is right underneath London’s tallest building, the Shard.) The market is the kind of place that has helped to drag the UK’s justifiably ridiculed culinary reputation out of the gutter over recent decades. People are suddenly interested in what they are eating, if they can afford it, at least. The aisles were crowded with people trying and buying.

So it was a good place to meet urban sketchers Jesica Lewit and Evelyn Rowland last weekend. The staff at the Porteña food stall were kind to let us sit outside their stall to draw, as trains rattled towards London Bridge station overhead. (Reminder: London Bridge does not have towers – that is Tower Bridge.)
