After thirteen years of struggle to regain this place, declared “Property of Cultural Interest” in 2003, and owned by Seville City Hall, the neighbors decided to start by themselves the rehabilitation of Casa Grande, in a small Square called Pumarejo in Seville.
In 2012 they drove the project “Lo hacemos nosotr@s” (“We do ourselves”) designed to promote small social actions to contribute to the rehabilitation of self-managed spaces like this, forgotten by the authorities, and to give a new life to this places.
In recent days I’m hearing too often things like these: “... the protest is worthless” “… we have no power to change things …”
This house is a great example of how to fight with deafness and negligence of the government with popular reaction and citizen participation, with perseverance and love, taking the lead in the use of public places.
Yesterday the neighbors invited Seville sketchers to draw inside this house.
We were there, they told us their story and made us feel as a part of their project. It was a very beautiful experience.
I share with you here a video from Emek Filogullari abut the subject…
