Today I joined a sketchwalk like no other I’ve ever been to. Most sketchers in the group carried roller bags packed with their art supplies and sketched on easels attached to folding tripods. Leading the group was the one and only Mr. Khoo, a renowned watercolorist from Penang, Malaysia, who is also the co-founder of Urban Sketchers Penang.
For someone like me, who usually draws on sketchbooks or sketchpads, this approach to sketching has always felt quite intimidating. It takes some serious confidence to plant yourself on the sidewalk with so much gear. I think passersby are ten times more likely to distract you than when you are just holding a little sketchbook. But Mr. Khoo and the rest of this gang of “tripod sketchers” were completely concentrated on their work and seemingly unaware of anything else happening around them.
I was inspired!
