Zanzibar: a sketchers paradise!

The first time I heard the word Zanzibar I was a little kid, I didn’t know where it was, but it sounded far away, tropic and exotic..

Last year I got a commission to teach workshop of Illustration in Dar es Salaam together with Stephanie Ledoux. It was a join project between the Goethe Institute and the Alliance Francaise.  So I checked where else I can visit when travelling there and there it was the island of Zanzibar.. reading about it only feed more  my imagination,  I read about the city of Stone Town and its arabic past..as capital of the Oman.

Stone town is a very safe city, and a very relaxing place to draw, people are extremely friendly

Stephanie joined me in Zanzibar and we spent 4 days exploring the city and  sketching together, that was the first time we actually  met and help us later to make a great team at our workshop. You know that travelling with other sketchers make you draw more and learn a lot from each other.  Stephanie’s work is amazing, she carries her book of wonder as I called, an old photo album that she fills with collages and painted color backgrounds. She does not draw chronologically but according to the subject she will find a page that fits the mood.
