Your favourite books about sketching?

[By Ed Harker] I’m looking forward to giving a lecture on the history of books about sketching (not sketch-books!) at the Symposium. I’ll be looking at some early examples from the UK, comparing them with some of the many available today, and considering what makes a great great sketching book.

I want to consider as many as possible so I need your help

Which are your favourites, and why do you like them?

Are they practical/inspirational, ancient/modern, manual/art-book, local/global?

Maybe it’s just about one artist, or one approach?

I’m particularly interested in hearing about the more obscure/out-of-print ones, the kind I’m always looking for in charity shops (see below).

And I’d love to be able to compare the UK/US books with examples from around the world.

Please share your suggestions through the comments section below, and I’ll add your contributions to the lecture, creating a global long-list of recommended titles.

Many thanks, and see you in July!

Ed
