Countdown to #USkManchester2016: The Town Hall, Albert Square

[By Liz Ackerley] We are now on the 14th week of my countdown with only 3 more weeks until the USk International Symposium here in Manchester! Oh my goodness-the next post I do will be in July which is when the symposium will take place!!!   For this week’s sketch, I have turned right passed central library onto Mount Street and around Albert Square to have the Town Hall building in front of me.  You can also see The Albert Memorial (in front of the Town Hall) and The Town Hall Extension to the right.  The Town Hall is a Victorian neo-gothic building and home to Manchester City Council, the building was completed in 1877 and contains grand ceremonial rooms such as the Great Hall and the Sculpture Hall.  The exterior is dominated by the clock tower which rises to 85 m.  In 1938 a detached Town Hall Extension was completed and is connected by two covered bridges over Lloyd Street.  The town Hall is Grade I listed and is regarded as one of the finest interpretations of Gothic revival architecture in the world.  You are in for a treat!
