Oldest Street in Kuching

The stretch of shophouses between junction to China Street and Tun Abg Hj Openg Road

[By Peggy Wong in Kuching, Borneo]  Recently, USk Kuching completed a Sketch Swap with USk Netherlands, the sketch above was my sketch ‘story’ for the swap; one of the oldest and busiest street in Kuching, the Main Bazaar.

The Main Bazaar is still one of the arterial access roads in the old precinct of Kuching city.  It used to be the commercial centre fronting the docks and warehouses along the Sarawak River.  These days, it is lined mainly with tourist souvenir stores and a handful of old trading shops; selling groceries, hardware, dry goods, furniture, book store, bank, gold smiths, etc.  Recently a few more guest accommodations have joined the neighbourhood.

Occasionally, I return for a sketch at a section along this old street, which I have not covered before.  The colour and texture of old architecture with their shop signages, still fascinates me.  Here are some other sketches I did of the Main Bazaar.  I will be back for more, definitely.
