Even though the beaver didn’t become Canada’s national symbol until 1975, it had already been a part of the Canadian identity long before it’s official status. Beavers can be found in every region in Canada, particularly near bodies of water.
The beaver can be seen everywhere, from retail merchandise to the popular Beavertail pastries, and most recently a scavenger hunt around the Old Town Toronto neighbourhood when the World Cup was in town, where people were invited to find 52 beaver statues all hand painted by local artists.
Fun fact: The beaver was the first universally popular symbol for Canada, even before the maple leaf!
