Old high school–empty now

Roosevelt School, Excelsior Springs

I hate to see these old buildings no longer used and falling into disrepair; one of the other schools here, contemporary to this one, has been victim of vandalism and arson, so I have been jonesing to sketch this one. The other day I noticed again the beautiful details they don’t bother with any more, and had to sketch, first chance I got. It was actually almost too warm in the truck today, but lovely to get to do some drawing just for the fun of it.

This place has quite a history; the New York Giants practiced on their football field in 1953. It’s said to be haunted, of course, and it is for me. I remember hearing two of my incredible godchildren singing there, years ago, and blowing me out of the water with their voices!

Edit: I went back yesterday to check the date on the cornerstone…it was built in 1929. Pretty amazing…
