Davis, CA: The 45th Worldwide Sketchcrawl finally got me out sketching. I’ve been hunkered down with work and other stuff, namely under-7 soccer coaching my son’s team, the Red Foxes; they were amazing. I also designed their badge and stickers for the families and an end-of-season panini-esque sticker album with colouring-in pages and mazes and a colourful little guide to all of the kits of all the opposing teams… I go a bit overboard when I bring art into other pursuits. I also had the kids design their own badge, which was fun. Not been sketching as much but definitely been doing art. Next up, designing this year’s advent calendar. Anyway, we had an early 9:00am game one Saturday morning (we won), so I organized the sketchcrawl to start afterwards downtown. We met up outside Whole foods on the corner of 1st and Richards, and I started out by sketching the old Boy Scout Hut, below. Behind it is what is called the Art Garage – the inside is now full of publicly commissioned murals, while the outside has some very interesting art benches. Davis is absolutely full of artists, and the city has really made an effort to show that off now. I believe even the old scout hut is part of another gallery, the Natsoulas. After sketching this I went into panorama mode, and sketched the above scene, Orange Court on 2nd Street. Another Davis sketcher, Marlene Lee, can be just about made out sketching outside the clothes store Haute Again on the left.
Buoyed on by making all the stickers for the boy’s soccer team, I also made little ‘Let’s Draw Davis’ stickers for the participants. I also made a Handy Map. Another bright sunny afternoon in Davis! Finally, finally, after an endless dry summer, slightly cooler weather is coming in. Fall is finally here.
